Prefabricated Fireplace

The wood burning prefabricated fireplace has definitely increased in popularity. They provide an affordable option for adding a fireplace to your home. This is the type of fireplace most commonly used by builders and homeowners.

They are constructed of metal with a fire-resistant barrier on the interior of the firebox and have a metal chimney pipe. Kits are available for providing outdoor air for combustion which increases efficiency by not wasting indoor air up the chimney.

You can select either a radiant or a heat-circulating design. In the heat-circulating, a small fan draws in cool room air and circulates it around the firebox to heat it and then blows it back out into the room. A radiant type of fireplace transfers heat by radiation out into the room.

The picture to the right is an example of a wood burning metal prefabricated fireplace with vented gas logs installed.

Gas logs (natural gas or propane) can be installed in prefabricated fireplaces. Although some of them cannot handle vent-less gas logs, so check with the manufacturer.

Building Tip

"Have your home tested for radon gas, especially if it is a basement. Most basement homes will need an active radon mitigation system, so plan on it. Consider installing an active system regardless of the reading, therefore you are ensured low levels of radon all the time."

"The one piece of advice I can give you is, do what turns you on. Do something that if you had all the money in the world, you’d still be doing it. You’ve got to have a reason to jump out of bed in the morning."
